Carlo Ratti to Transform 19th-Century Turin Barracks into Co-Living Hub

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Renovation of the Caserma La Marmora in Turin, designed by Carlo Ratti Associati, is set to begin in 2018. The 19th-century military complex, spanning 20,000 square meters across eight buildings arranged around a central courtyard, will be redeveloped into a mixed-use community featuring co-living, co-working, and co-making spaces. The project aims to attract local residents, students, and workers, creating a new social hub. Housing options range from 20-square-meter extra-small units to 180-square-meter extra-large apartments, based on the original barrel-vaulted module. A new 100-by-60-meter public square with green ramps and terraces will open onto Corso Quintino Sella, featuring underground parking and space for public events. Before construction, the barracks will host the next edition of Paratissima from November 1 to 5. Carlo Ratti emphasized that the design allows for continuous adaptation based on user needs, avoiding a prescriptive approach.
