Carlo Ratti to Curate 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale
Carlo Ratti, the Italian architect and engineer born in Turin in 1971, has been appointed curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, scheduled from May 10 to November 23, 2025. The nomination was proposed by outgoing President Roberto Cicutto in agreement with incoming President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, who will serve from March 2024 to 2027. Ratti is the fifth Italian director of the architecture biennale, following Paolo Portoghesi, Aldo Rossi, Francesco Dal Co, and Massimiliano Fuksas. He is known for founding CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati with offices in Turin, New York City, and London, and for directing the MIT Senseable City Lab. His past curatorial work includes the BMW Guggenheim Pavilion in Berlin, the Future Food District at Expo Milano 2015, chief curator of the 8th UABB in Shenzhen (2019), co-curator of the 2nd Porto Design Biennale (2021), and Creative Mediator for Manifesta 14 in Pristina (2022). He also designed the Italy Pavilion at Expo Dubai 2020 and is currently working on the France Pavilion for Expo Osaka 2025. Ratti succeeds Lesley Lokko, whose edition "The Laboratory of the Future" attracted 285,000 tickets sold during its six-month public opening plus 14,150 pre-opening visits. In his initial statement, Ratti emphasized that architecture must harness all forms of intelligence—natural evolution, computing power, and collective wisdom—to address a world in crisis.
