Carlo Ratti's 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale Shifts Focus from Mitigation to Adaptation
Carlo Ratti, curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, titled 'Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.', has announced a paradigm shift from climate mitigation to adaptation. The exhibition, opening May 10, 2025, will feature over 750 participants selected via an unprecedented open call ('space for ideas'), including architects, artists, scientists, philosophers, and even humanoid robots. Due to renovations of the Central Pavilion, the show will extend into public spaces across Venice, including Piazza San Marco and the IUAV University. Ratti emphasizes the urgency of climate adaptation, citing recent disasters like Los Angeles wildfires, Valencia floods, and Sicily drought. The Biennale will host the world's first public display of humanoid robots learning construction tasks, in collaboration with Ance and Filiera Fondamentale. A Circular Economy Manifesto, co-written with Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, aims to make the event more sustainable. Ratti's firm, CRA – Carlo Ratti Associati, is also involved in Expo 2025 Osaka with the French Pavilion.
