Carlo Rambaldi retrospective in Rome showcases special effects pioneer's legacy
In Rome, a new exhibition honors Carlo Rambaldi (1925–2012), the Italian special effects innovator known for transforming cinema with his animatronic designs. Curated by Claudio Libero Pisano, the display at Palazzo Esposizioni features an exclusive collection of Rambaldi's sketches, documents, and notable props, such as King Kong's hand (1976), the original Alien (1979), and his first animated puppet, Pinocchio. Rambaldi was a pioneer in mechatronics, securing a patent for 'electromechanical animation for puppets' on March 17, 1956. Throughout his career, he collaborated with renowned directors like Steven Spielberg, Dario Argento, and Ridley Scott. The exhibition also showcases how his mechanical artistry paved the way for modern digital effects, with the young studio MAKINARIUM (established 2015) restoring several pieces. Their animatronic dragon for Matteo Garrone's 'Il racconto dei racconti' earned a David di Donatello for special effects, perpetuating Rambaldi's influence. The show explores the evolution of the alien figure, from the menacing creature in Alien to the compassionate character in E.T. (1982), where design allowed for authentic interactions.
