Carlo Melograni's 'Progettare per chi va in tram' Updated Edition

publication · 2026-04-27

The updated edition of Carlo Melograni's 'Progettare per chi va in tram. Il mestiere dell’architetto' (Quodlibet, 2020) adds two new essays to the original six lectures from 2002. Born in 1924, the Roman architect focuses his essayistic production on the last twenty years, linking 20th-century history to contemporary debate. The eight chapters systematize trends, concepts, architectures, objects, events, and figures interacting with 'modernity' as a social project. Melograni collaborated on the ambitious but flawed Quartiere Tiburtino in Rome (1949-54) with Mario Ridolfi and Ludovico Quaroni. He taught at Palermo, Sapienza Rome, and was dean of Roma Tre's architecture faculty (1994-1997). The book argues for architecture of public utility, improving living conditions through collective effort. Melograni cites Paolo Conte's 'Moderno, cioè fuori moda' and admires Giancarlo De Carlo and Renzo Piano as continuators of the modern project.
