Carlo Mattioli Exhibition Across Three Venues in Parma

exhibition · 2026-05-05

An exhibition of 57 paintings by Carlo Mattioli (1911–1994) is on view at the Franco Maria Ricci complex in Fontanellato, Parma, from 1961 to 1993, the period when he focused most on painting after decades of drawing. The works come from the Studio Museo and 25 lenders, including five paintings related to Caravaggio's Basket of Fruit and four nearly monochrome portraits of Giorgio Morandi shown together for the first time. Other portraits depict Atanasio Soldati, Renato Guttuso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Curator Sandro Parmiggiani describes Mattioli as a bridge between Italian, European, and American art from a provincial city that was a European cultural capital. The exhibition extends to the Biblioteca Palatina, where Mattioli's book illustrations for Ugo Guanda (including the Fenice logo) and his stage and costume designs are displayed. His home and atelier remain as they were at his death, with a complete reinstallation of works for this show. Mattioli won the International Prize for a Draftsman at the 1956 Venice Biennale.
