Carlo Levi's Sardinian Journey Explored in Nuoro Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The MAN Museum in Nuoro presents a comprehensive exhibition on Carlo Levi, marking 120 years since his birth. The show features 89 works—paintings, drawings, and engravings—documenting his artistic research, alongside photographs from his unpublished 1952 travel album. The exhibition also includes an audiovisual project by artist Vittoria Soddu (born 1986, Sassari), inspired by a crow donated to Levi named Orune. Levi's two trips to Sardinia in 1952 and 1962, mediated by Emilio Lussu, resulted in the book "Tutto il miele è finito" (first published in 1964), whose title derives from a Sardinian funeral chant. The exhibition traces Levi's stylistic evolution from Post-Impressionism and Macchiaioli influences in the 1920s to a more realistic, Magical Realist language after WWII. It includes the famous "Autoritratto con la mano gialla" (1930) and a series of twelve drawings from the "blindness cycle" (1973), exhibited in Italy for the first time. Soddu's short film "Ogni andare è un ritornare" accompanies the show, depicting contemporary Nuoro's daily life in dialogue with Levi's visions.
