Carlo Levi's Political Graphics at Villa Torlonia, Rome
A Roman exhibition at Villa Torlonia, curated by Fabio Massimo Pellicano, presents Carlo Levi's political graphic works, mostly created in 1947-48 for the newspaper L'Italia Socialista, directed by Aldo Garosci. This is the third exhibition on Levi after those in Turin (Fondazione Amendola) and Paris (Istituto Italiano di Cultura), but the only one to include his political cartoons. The drawings capture the cultural climate after the Italian Constitution's promulgation on December 27, 1947, and feature recurring characters like "donna turrita/Italia," "Alcide De Gasperi/Democrazia Cristiana," "Giuseppe Garibaldi/FdP: PCI-PSI," and "Manganello/Ministro Scelba." The exhibition also includes portraits of antifascist comrades from the 1930s, such as Carlo Rosselli, Aldo Garosci, and Leone Ginzburg, alongside two self-portraits and still lifes. Levi, a painter by training, was a student of Felice Casorati and connected to the School of Paris. He was elected senator in 1963 for the Italian Communist Party. The exhibition highlights his diverse expressive languages rooted in his Jewish cultural heritage and his commitment to universal wisdom.
