Carlo Alfano: Philosophical Art at Mart Rovereto
The Mart in Rovereto is hosting a major monographic exhibition of Neapolitan artist Carlo Alfano (1932-1990), coinciding with the museum's 15th anniversary. The show, organized in collaboration with the Museo Madre di Napoli and the Archivio Alfano, presents large-scale works and reinterprets Alfano's career through philosophical influences from Michel Foucault and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Alfano, active in the Naples art scene of Lucio Amelio and Studio Morra, favored philosophers over critics. The exhibition explores the subject as a limit, perception, and the dissolution of the subject-object dualism. Key works include the series Distanze, which references Foucault's analysis of Las Meninas and incorporates the viewer; Tipo e Strutture ritmiche and Tempi prospettici, involving kinetic experiments with plexiglas cylinders; Stanza per voci, an environmental and sound piece with an aluminum frame and magnetic tape; and Frammenti di un Autoritratto Anonimo, moving toward conceptual art. Eco-Discesa features a canvas cut and sewn, symbolizing the fragmented self. The exhibition runs at Mart Rovereto.
