Carlito Carvalhosa's Legacy Explored Through Major Installations and Collective Beginnings

Carlito Carvalhosa, a prominent figure in Brazilian contemporary art, passed away in May at the age of 59. His artistic journey commenced in the 1980s with the group Casa 7, which included Fábio Miguez, Nuno Ramos, Paulo Monteiro, and Rodrigo Andrade, where they concentrated on neo-expressionism using simple materials. Over time, Carvalhosa's creations expanded to encompass sculptural explorations and environmental projects, incorporating elements like light, fabrics, wood, and plaster. His notable 1999 installation 'Duas Águas' at MuBE in São Paulo featured the relocation of his studio and the crafting of eight-ton plaster shapes. Other significant pieces include 'Sala de Espera' (2013), 'A Soma dos Dias' (2010, 2011), and 'Já estava assim quando cheguei' (2006). Critics referred to his art as 'non-places,' delving into the dynamic between the artwork and the audience.
