Carlito Carvalhosa, Brazilian Artist Known for Material Innovation, Dies at 60

Brazilian artist Carlito Carvalhosa, a member of the Casa 7 collective, has passed away. In the 1980s, he collaborated in a São Paulo studio with Nuno Ramos, Fabio Miguez, Paulo Monteiro, and Rodrigo Andrade, sharing artistic ideas and styles. They initially painted with enamel on craft paper starting in 1984, before moving to oil on canvas in 1985. Carvalhosa is known for works such as an untitled piece featuring rusted metal elements and a paraffin and wax creation. Following the dissolution of Casa 7, he produced smaller sculptures like Untitled (1992) and explored porcelain. His 2011 installation, Sum of Days, showcased at MoMA, included a textile curtain and ambient sound. His art is part of collections at CIFO, Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
