Carla Lonzi's Complete Works to Be Republished by La Tartaruga
La Tartaruga, the Italian feminist publishing house founded in 1975 by Laura Lepetit, will republish the entire oeuvre of Carla Lonzi, a foundational figure of 1970s Italian feminism. The first volume, "Sputiamo su Hegel e altri scritti," a landmark feminist text originally published in the 1970s and long out of print, will be released on September 5, 2023, at Festivaletteratura in Mantua. The project is curated by Annarosa Buttarelli, a philosopher and professor at the University of Verona, without any critical apparatus. Lonzi (Florence, 1931 – Milan, 1982) initially gained fame in the art world before co-founding the Rivolta Femminile movement with Carla Accardi and Elvira Banotti in 1970. Her manifesto, considered the formal start of Italian feminism, was followed by "Sputiamo su Hegel," which critiques Hegel, Freud, and Marx. The reissue addresses a long-felt gap in feminist publishing. Subsequent volumes will include "Taci, anzi parla. Diario di una femminista," "Vai pure. Dialogo con Pietro Consagra," "Scacco ragionato. Poesie," and "Scritti sull'arte." The publishing house, now owned by La Nave di Teseo after Lepetit's death in 2021, has previously introduced authors like Margaret Atwood and Virginia Woolf to Italy.
