Carla Accardi's Sicofoil Works on View at M&L Fine Art in London

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Carla Accardi (Trapani, 1924 – Rome, 2014) is the subject of a solo exhibition at M&L Fine Art in London's Mayfair district, presenting ten works on sicofoil from the 1960s and 1970s. The show precedes a retrospective at Milan's Museo del Novecento (March–August). Accardi, a Marxist and feminist, was a member of the Forma 1 group and the Italian Communist Party until 1957, when she left in protest of the Soviet invasion of Hungary. Her use of transparent plastic sheeting breaks with painterly convention by incorporating the wooden frame and wall into the composition. Works like 'Ori' (1968) and 'Segni Rosa' (1971) feature vibrant colored marks that evoke Sicilian Baroque. The exhibition runs until May 8, 2020.
