Carla Accardi's Dual Retrospective Opens Across Brescia and Milan

Two concurrent exhibitions of Carla Accardi (1924–2014) opened four days apart in September 2018, at Galleria Francesca Minini in Milan (September 18) and Galleria Massimo Minini in Brescia (September 22). The shows present distinct selections of the Sicilian artist's abstract, sign-based paintings and sculptures, curated according to each gallerist's personal criteria rather than chronology or style. In Brescia, works from 1966 to 2010 include sculptural extensions such as 'Armadio Inutile' (2001), alongside paintings like 'Improvviso n.1' (2008) and 'Segni e forme' (2007). A notable grouping features 'Rossoblu' (1965), 'Oro verde su cartone' (1966), and 'Azzurroargento' (1969). Later 'Bianco su nero' works (1982–83) play with light on black backgrounds. A connecting thread between the two venues is Accardi's bicrome plexiglas sculptures lit from within, made from sicofoil, a transparent plastic she used from 1965 onward for cylinders and cones. At Francesca Minini, a large-scale felt floor installation ('Pavimento', 2009–10) anchors the space, drawing in the canvases 'Giallo rosa' (2004) and 'Bianco nero' (2004). Accardi was a student of Consagra and associated with Turcato, Perilli, and Dorazio.
