Carla Accardi and Antonio Sanfilippo Retrospective at Marsala's Convento del Carmine

From September 26, the Convento del Carmine in Marsala, Sicily, hosts 'Carla Accardi – Antonio Sanfilippo. L’avventura del segno', a dual retrospective curated by Sergio Troisi. The exhibition traces the parallel careers of Accardi (Trapani, 1924 – Rome, 2014) and Sanfilippo (Partanna, 1923 – Rome, 1980), pioneers of Italian abstraction and key members of the Forma 1 group founded in 1947 alongside Ugo Attardi, Pietro Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Achille Perilli, and Giulio Turcato. The show features around fifty works from public and private collections, arranged to highlight stylistic similarities and differences. It covers their constructivist beginnings in the late 1940s, the centrality of the 'segno' (sign) in the 1950s, and continues into the early 1970s when Sanfilippo's production slowed and ceased. A dedicated room presents works reduced to white, black, and gray, emphasizing Accardi's structural sign against Sanfilippo's lyrical one. Later sections contrast Accardi's iridescent colors and industrial sicofoil experiments with Sanfilippo's shrinking, constellation-like forms and empty spaces. The exhibition is organized by the Ente Mostra di Pittura Contemporanea 'Città di Marsala' and the Archivio Accardi Sanfilippo in Rome.
