Carl Andre and Paula Cooper Honored with French Order of Arts and Letters
The French Embassy in Washington has bestowed the Order of Arts and Letters upon minimalist artist Carl Andre and gallerist Paula Cooper. Andre received the rank of commandeur, while Cooper was elevated from chevalier to officier, having first been honored in 2002. Their professional relationship dates to Cooper's gallery's inaugural 1968 group exhibition, which featured Andre's work. Although formal representation began ten years later, their collaboration persists, with Andre currently included in the gallery's group exhibition 'The Xerox Box'. Andre was recently featured in a retrospective organized by the Dia Art Foundation, scheduled to travel to Berlin's Hamburger Bahnhof Museum from 7 May to 25 September 2016, and subsequently to the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris from October 2016 to February 2017. The award recognizes significant contributions to French arts and culture.
