Caribbean Identity Takes Center Stage at 58th Venice Biennale

The 58th Venice Biennale, curated by Ralph Rugoff, features national pavilions from Antigua and Barbuda and Grenada, exploring Caribbean identity through carnival, memory, and resistance themes. The Antiguan and Barbudan pavilion, titled 'Find Yourself: Carnival and Resistance,' is overseen by Barbara Paca and Nina Khrushcheva. It honors carnival as a tool for liberation for Afro-Caribbeans while critiquing global elites. Artists like Timothy Payne and Sir Gerald Price are showcased. On the other hand, Grenada's pavilion, 'Epic Memory,' curated by Daniele Radini Tedeschi, focuses on both individual and collective histories that shape identity, with artists such as Amy Cannestra and Shervone Neckles. The Biennale, featuring 79 artists in the international exhibition and 89 national pavilions, runs until November 24, 2019.
