Carey Young's Solo Exhibition at Le Quartier, Quimper
Carey Young, born in Zambia in 1970 and based in London, presents a solo exhibition at Le Quartier in Quimper from May 25 to September 15, 2013. Her practice challenges conventional perspectives on organization. In "Inventory" (2007), she lists the chemical elements composing her body, assigning them market values. Early works from around 2000 show her distancing from major artistic references, mimicking performances by Valie Export and Bruce Nauman in rapidly urbanizing cities like Dubai and Sharjah. In London's financial district, she imitates Richard Long's walking lines. Her later work becomes more personal, addressing media, economics, law, and science. "Everything You Have Heard Is False" (1999) features her giving a rhetoric lesson at Hyde Park's Speaker's Corner. "I'm a Revolutionary" (2001) shows her repeating the phrase under a coach's direction. Other works explore property rights in outer space. Curator Keren Detton notes that Young builds critical thought revealing interconnections between economy, art, justice, and politics.
