Caravaggio's 'Ecce Homo' and 'Flagellation' reunite at Capodimonte for Naples' 2500th anniversary

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte in Naples will host 'Doppio Caravaggio', a dual exhibition featuring Caravaggio's 'Ecce Homo' from the Museo del Prado and 'La Flagellazione' from the museum's own collection, from July 24 to November 2, 2025. The exhibition is part of 'Napoli Millenaria', a citywide cultural program celebrating the 2,500th anniversary of Naples' founding, organized by the Comune di Napoli with over 80 local institutions, universities, and cultural entities. 'Ecce Homo' returns to Naples after four centuries, having been painted there around 1607, the same period Caravaggio created 'La Flagellazione' for the Church of San Domenico Maggiore. The painting's importance is evidenced by its influence on Battistello Caracciolo's 1607-1608 'Pala della Stella'. The exhibition is part of Capodimonte's 'L'Ospite' initiative, which fosters exchanges with major Italian and international museums while the museum undergoes renovation. Director Eike Schmidt expressed gratitude to the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the painting's owner, and the Museo del Prado for loaning the work, and thanked Mayor Gaetano Manfredi and the Comune for their support. The two masterpieces will be displayed together on the same wall in room 62.
