Caravaggio's 'Dentro Caravaggio' Exhibition in Milan Reveals Hidden Techniques
A major exhibition titled 'Dentro Caravaggio' will open on September 29 at Palazzo Reale in Milan, marking the 400th anniversary of Caravaggio's death. Curated by Rossella Vodret, the show features 18 masterpieces loaned from Italian and international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome, the National Gallery in London, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. The exhibition pairs artworks with diagnostic images from scientific analyses funded by the Bracco Group, revealing Caravaggio's creative process. Research began in 2009 under the MiBACT, with support from the National Committee for the IV Centenary of Caravaggio's Death, chaired by Maurizio Calvesi. The scientific committee is led by Keith Christiansen of the Metropolitan Museum, with Mina Gregori and Maurizio Calvesi as honorary co-presidents. The exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Milan–Culture, Palazzo Reale, and MondoMostre Skira, in collaboration with MiBACT. The layout is designed by Studio Cerri & Associati. The show aims to make advanced technical knowledge accessible to the public, highlighting discoveries such as hidden images and Caravaggio's use of drawing, debunking the myth that he did not sketch.
