Caravaggio loan controversy: promised funds slashed, restoration deemed unnecessary

The loan of Caravaggio's 'The Burial of Saint Lucy' from the FEC to the MART in Trento and Rovereto for a Vittorio Sgarbi exhibition has sparked controversy. The painting's return to its original site, the Church of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro in the Borgata district, was a key rationale, but the author argues that simply relocating the artwork won't trigger urban renewal, citing the failed case of the Venus from Morgantina. The author proposes three conditions for effective requalification: ensuring proper conservation conditions (or using a perfect copy and placing the original in the Bellomo Museum), a quality museum display, and a sustainable urban mobility project linking Ortigia to Epipoli, with community participation.
