Caravaggio and His Followers in Southern Italy at Otranto Castle

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The exhibition 'Caravaggio e i caravaggeschi nell’Italia meridionale' runs until September 24, 2017, at the Aragonese Castle in Otranto. Organized by the Municipality of Otranto and Civita Mostre, it is curated by Maria Cristina Bandera and draws from the collection of the Fondazione Roberto Longhi. The show highlights Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) and his followers, framed by the critical work of art historian Roberto Longhi, who defined Caravaggio as the first painter of the modern era. A key work on display is 'Boy Bitten by a Lizard,' acquired by Longhi in 1928. The exhibition also explores the presence of Caravaggesque artists in southern Italy.
