Capri to Establish Autonomous Museum Directorate for State Sites
Italian Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano announced that all state archaeological sites on Capri will be consolidated under a new autonomous directorate, the 'Musei di Capri'. During a visit to Villa Jovis alongside Director General of Museums Massimo Osanna and Superintendent Mariano Nuzzo, Sangiuliano stated that resources are available for restoration and further funding is possible. The initiative aims to enhance Capri's cultural tourism offering. Villa Jovis, the ancient palace of Emperor Tiberius, spans over 7,000 square meters and was rediscovered in the 18th century. A €7.5 million investment has been allocated, with nearly €5 million for restoration, structural consolidation, belvedere safety, and accessibility improvements. Additional funds will cover video surveillance, lighting, and vegetation clearance. The Torre Faro restoration is nearing completion, and a virtual museum will be housed in spaces adjacent to the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso. On the same day, the historic Via Krupp—a scenic road carved into the cliff connecting the Gardens of Augustus to Marina Piccola—reopened after nine years of maintenance work. Sangiuliano called it a 'true work of art' to be preserved and promoted.
