Capodimonte and Teatro San Carlo Unite in Grand Exhibition of Porcelain and Music
A major exhibition at the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples brings together over 1,000 objects, including more than 300 porcelains from the Royal Factories of Capodimonte and Naples, and over 150 costumes from the Teatro di San Carlo. The show, set across 19 rooms of the Royal Apartment, explores the 18th-century Neapolitan court of King Charles of Bourbon and his wife, who founded the Real Fabbrica at the Reggia di Capodimonte, initiating a porcelain tradition that continues today. Simultaneously, Naples was a global music capital, with musicians from the Teatro di San Carlo trained in the city's conservatories and sought after by European courts in Saint Petersburg, Paris, London, and Vienna. The exhibition transforms the royal palace into a theatrical spectacle, juxtaposing opera characters in period costumes with decorative art from the Bourbon manufactories. The scenography, designed by artist Hubert le Gall, incorporates 18th-century music as a leitmotif, experienced through dynamic headphones that activate as visitors move from room to room, rather than standard audioguides.
