Cao Fei's First Italian Solo Exhibition at MAXXI Rome
The MAXXI museum in Rome presents the first solo exhibition in Italy of Chinese artist Cao Fei (born 1978, Guangzhou). Curated by Hou Hanru, the show features video works, VR experiences, and installations exploring themes of technology, alienation, and societal collapse with irony and humor. Key works include 'Nova' (2019), a film about a programmer who traps his son in cyberspace; 'Eternal Wave', an interactive VR piece produced with Acute Art; 'Haze and Fog' (2014), addressing air pollution; 'RMB City' and 'Intellectual Marathon', set in the utopian city of Second Life; 'La Town', a post-apocalyptic video; and 'Isle of Instability', created during lockdown in Singapore with support from Audemars Piguet Contemporary. The exhibition is divided into three sections and runs at MAXXI in Rome.
