Cao Fei Creates Quantum Garden Digital Art for BMW's CES Debut

digital · 2026-04-27

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Chinese artist Cao Fei (born 1978 in Canton) unveiled Quantum Garden, a digital artwork commissioned by BMW for the 50th anniversary of its BMW Cultural Engagement program. The piece integrates with BMW's My Mode driving assistant, transforming the vehicle's interior into a dynamic galaxy of points, light beams, and nebulae that expand and contract at varying speeds. Cao Fei described the work as a poetic collection of universes reflecting humanity's desire for connection and harmony with nature, drawing from Asian cultural concepts. She previously collaborated with BMW in 2017, creating the 18th BMW Art Car using augmented reality, and noted that the pandemic shift to the metaverse inspired this new digital mode. Quantum Garden is part of her solo exhibition Supernova at MAXXI – Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo in Rome, running until May 8, 2022.
