artist · 2026-04-20

On 23 November 2015, Chinese artist Cao Fei and American artist John Baldessari were chosen to each design a new BMW Art Car based on the BMW M6 GT3 model. Their creations will be presented in museums during 2017 and will also be tested on racetracks. An international jury of museum directors and curators made the selection, including Chris Dercon from Tate Modern in London, Juan Gaitán from Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City, Beatrix Ruf from the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Philip Tinari from the Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art in Beijing, and Adam D. Weinberg from the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. Cao Fei will become the youngest artist represented in the BMW Art Car collection, while Baldessari will be the oldest. The collection features previous works by artists such as Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, David Hockney, Olafur Eliasson, and Jeff Koons, whose car is the most recent addition before this announcement.
