Cantiere Futuro tackles housing crisis with '10-euro-a-day' home model

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

The fourth edition of Cantiere Futuro, organized by Ceramiche Marca Corona for ART CITY Bologna 2026, opened with a lecture by anthropologist Franco La Cecla on 'domesticating architecture.' The event then addressed Italy's housing crisis through two roundtables moderated by architect Pierluigi Molteni. Bologna's deputy mayor Emily Marion Clancy cited local successes like Porto 15, Italy's first fully public cohousing, and noted Bologna's membership in the Mayors for Housing network, which in May 2025 presented the EU must act now plan demanding a €300 billion European fund for accessible housing. Marco Battaglia of Investire SGR discussed their social housing projects, including the transformation of Florence's Villa Monna Tessa into a student residence by 2027/2028. Marco Marcatili of Lombardini22 proposed a 'house at €10 per day' model, framing housing as a 'citizenship infrastructure.' Architect Davide Tommaso Ferrando criticized Airbnb as 'the main urban planning agent of the last twenty years.' The event concluded with a discussion on everyday housing featuring Stefano Betti, Stefano Pujatti, and Ferrando himself.
