Canova's Paolina Bonaparte: Online Exhibition at Museo Gypsotheca

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo Gypsotheca Antonio Canova in Possagno has launched a virtual exhibition titled 'Paolina. Storia di un capolavoro,' showcasing Antonio Canova's plaster cast of Paolina Bonaparte, which will be available online until May 30, 2021, due to pandemic limitations. This event precedes the bicentennial of Canova's passing in 2022 (1757-1822). The exhibition emphasizes the plaster model for 'Paolina Borghese Bonaparte as Venus Victrix,' commissioned in 1805 and currently housed at Galleria Borghese in Rome. It includes preparatory drawings, paintings, and sculptures, while also addressing restoration efforts following damage incurred in July 2020. Vittorio Sgarbi has provided insights on the statue's restoration. Additionally, the exhibition features works like 'Danzatrici' and discusses the plaster's transport and wartime damage, along with planned streaming meetings and workshops.
