Canon Develops PFAS-Free Fluorine Alternative for Lens Coatings

Canon Optron, a member of the Canon Group specializing in optical materials, is creating a novel fluorine-free optical coating that replicates the water-repellent and durability characteristics of conventional fluorine coatings, while addressing concerns related to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). The new material, referred to as 'Dev-02-003,' has successfully undergone extensive durability assessments, including 10,000 scratch-resistance cycles and fabric abrasion tests, surpassing earlier fluorine-free options like OR-510. This innovation arises amid increasing global regulations targeting PFAS, particularly in the European Union, which has labeled them a 'significant and long-term threat to human health and ecosystems.' Canon's L-series lenses have incorporated fluorine coating since 2010, beginning with the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM. The new coating is anticipated to debut on professional RF lenses, which are subjected to tough conditions and frequent cleaning. If successful, Canon may lead the industry in eliminating fluorine without sacrificing optical performance, aligning with its sustainability goals.
