Cannes 77 Opens with Greta Gerwig Jury and Meryl Streep Honorary Palme d'Or

The 77th Cannes Film Festival has kicked off on the Croisette amid a charged atmosphere, as France's audiovisual sector grapples with MeToo protests and compensation disputes related to successful films. Leading the official jury is Greta Gerwig, director of Barbie, alongside members such as Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, Turkish screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, American actress Lily Gladstone, French actress Eva Green, Lebanese director Nadine Labaki, Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu, and French actor Omar Sy. Gerwig expressed her excitement for the role, previously held by Jane Campion a decade ago. The opening ceremony, hosted by Camille Cottin, was live-streamed to 780 cinemas across France. Meryl Streep was honored with the Palme d'Or, joining a prestigious list of past recipients. Streep last attended Cannes 35 years ago, where she won Best Actress for Evil Angels. The festival runs from May 14 to 25, featuring Quentin Dupieux's The Second Act as the opening film, starring Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, and Louis Garrel.
