Cannes 2026: Women Dominate the Croisette as Actresses and Directors

At the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, women overwhelmingly dominate both in front of and behind the camera, with an estimated 80% of the lineup featuring female-driven stories. Léa Seydoux stars in two competition films: Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet's "Le vie d'une femme" and Arthur Harari's "L'inconnue." Other notable actresses include Isabelle Huppert, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Virginie Efira, and Renate Reinsve. Among the standout queer films is Jane Schoenbrunn's meta slasher "Teenage Love and Death at Camp Miasma," starring Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Armstrong. Valentina Maurel's "Siempre soy tu animal materno" is a rare Costa Rican entry about two bourgeois sisters. Yukiko Sode's "All the Lovers in the Night" features Tadanobu Asano and Yukino Kishii in a story of a reclusive proofreader. Sandra Wollner's "Everytime" explores grief through two sisters and their mother, played by Carla Hüttemann, Lotte Shirin Kelling, and Birgit Minichmayr. Male directors like László Nemes ("Moulin" with Gilles Lellouche) are present but in the minority. Jury member Stellan Skarsgård noted the abundance of actresses competing for best performance.
