Cannes 2026 Opens with Emotional Competition Films

The 79th Cannes Film Festival began on May 13, 2026, with two competition films exploring a range of emotions. Vincent Garenq's 'L'Abandon' recounts the final eleven days of Samuel Paty, a history teacher murdered by an Islamist extremist in October 2020. The film depicts Paty's isolation as he was abandoned by students, parents, colleagues, and the institution. Actor Antoine Reinartz, who plays Paty, noted that the real events required no dramatization, as the mounting anguish is palpable. Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet's 'La Vie d'une Femme' follows Gabrielle Conti (Léa Drucker), a renowned surgeon whose life changes after meeting intern Frida (Mélanie Thierry). The film explores love, desire, and female relationships, earning Bourgeois-Tacquet a competition slot for her second feature. Additionally, Claire Denis was awarded the Carrosse d'Or for her lifetime achievement, which began 40 years ago with 'Chocolat' (1988) shot in Cameroon.
