Cannes 2025: Three Spanish Films Compete for Palme d'Or
The 79th Cannes Film Festival, opening Tuesday with the screening of 'La Venus eléctrica,' features an unprecedented Spanish presence. Festival director Thierry Frémaux noted in his traditional pre-festival press conference that Spain has always been a great film country. For the first time, three Spanish films are in official competition for the Palme d'Or: 'La bola negra' by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, 'El ser querido' by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and 'Amarga Navidad' by Pedro Almodóvar. Additionally, María Martínez Bayona's debut is in Cannes Premiere, and Aina Clotet's first feature 'Viva' is in the Semaine de la Critique. After French cinema, Spanish cinema has the most films in the festival this year.
