Canemorto's Linocut Shoes at Rome's Historic Litografia Bulla
The artist collective Canemorto, known for their itinerant practice and run-ins with law enforcement, has created a series of unique shoes called Zocur Footwear using linocut and other printmaking techniques at the historic Litografia Bulla in Rome. Founded in Paris and established in Rome since 1840, the lithography workshop has hosted artists like Mimmo Rotella, Lucio Fontana, and Giorgio de Chirico. For this project, Canemorto members acted as shoemakers, carving linoleum soles to print collective evocations. They also produced a lithographic series and a mezzotint, a rare engraving technique. The shoes are described as avant-garde and primitive, one-of-a-kind, and intended for extreme fashion enthusiasts. Unlike typical status-symbol footwear, these shoes have a life of their own, evoking Dorothy's silver slippers from The Wizard of Oz, grounding the wearer. The exhibition was held at Litografia Bulla in Rome in 2022.
