Candida Höfer's 'En Mexico' at Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Candida Höfer's series 'En Mexico' is on view at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City until July 30, 2017. The exhibition features 25 large-format photographs of Mexican architecture—theaters, churches, sanctuaries—taken during a 2015 trip across Mexico, including Mexico City, Guanajuato, Puebla, and Oaxaca. Höfer, born in 1944, studied under Hilla and Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf School, participated in Documenta 11 in 2002, and represented Germany at the Venice Biennale in 2003. Her work is held by Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, Museo Reina Sofía, and MoMA. The photographs deliberately exclude human figures, highlighting the use of public spaces when empty. The venue, founded by Jesuits in 1588, is a landmark of Mexican colonial architecture. The exhibition is part of events celebrating the Germany-Mexico twinning.
