Candida Gertler resigns from all voluntary arts positions in protest against antisemitism

institutional · 2026-04-24

Candida Gertler, who established the Outset Contemporary Art Fund, has stepped down from all voluntary roles within UK arts organizations, including her position on Tate's International Council. She cited a moral objection to the escalating antisemitism and the acceptance of hatred in artistic environments. Since co-founding Outset in 2003 and securing over £16 million for numerous artistic initiatives, Gertler was honored with an OBE in 2015 for her contributions to contemporary visual arts and philanthropy. Her resignation comes amidst protests regarding her and her husband Zak Gertler's purported ties to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On Monday, Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art revealed plans to erase the Gertlers' names from a gallery and donor board. An open letter with over 1,000 signatures urged Tate to sever connections with donors associated with the Israeli government, in advance of the Turner Prize on 3 December. The Strike Outset campaign has called for artists to withdraw from collaborations with the fund. Gertler expressed her inability to stay silent while institutions neglect equality and respect, noting that she had to seek information from these organizations rather than being approached. She affirmed that this decision does not signify a departure from art but rather a rethinking of its potential for fostering societal change.
