Candice Breitz's 'Whiteface' Video Installation at La Centrale, Brussels

exhibition · 2026-04-23

Candice Breitz's two-channel video installation 'Whiteface' (2022) is featured in the exhibition 'Extra' at La Centrale in Brussels, on view until September 17, 2023. Curated by artist Mehdi-Georges Lahlou, the show pairs his work with Breitz's. In 'Whiteface', Breitz performs lip-sync to sampled audio clips discussing whiteness, racism, and disinformation, wearing a white shirt and blonde wigs against a white background. The 35-minute looped video is projected in American shot, referencing TikTok aesthetics. Breitz, born in Johannesburg in 1972 during apartheid and based in Berlin since 2002, uses appropriation and role-play to critique popular culture and media bubbles. The work was produced by Museum Folkwang with support from Kunsthalle Baden-Baden. The installation includes a second layer of video sampling, reminiscent of Omer Fast's practice, juxtaposing Breitz's performance with original media sources. The piece addresses white privilege, algorithmic echo chambers, and the fear of losing inherited advantages.
