Candice Breitz's Love Story installation at KOW Berlin explores refugee narratives through Hollywood actors
From 29 April to 30 July 2016, KOW gallery in Berlin showcased Candice Breitz's film installation, Love Story. This artwork features performances by Alec Baldwin and Julianne Moore, who recite scripts derived from interviews with six asylum seekers. The primary projection displays them in stark black against a green screen, utilizing sharp editing techniques. In the lower level, original interviewees share their harrowing experiences, including a gay professor from Caracas, an Indian transsexual, a Syrian teenager, and a muscular Angolan. The installation juxtaposes the voices of celebrities with those of marginalized refugees. Breitz's editing weaves a narrative that concludes with the phrase "Here I am." ArtReview's September 2017 issue highlighted parallels to Bouchra Khalili's work.
