Canal du Midi Art Route: From Toulouse to Thau
The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a cultural journey from Toulouse to the Étang de Thau. Pierre-Paul Riquet conceived the 240-km canal in 1667, linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean; 12,000 workers built 328 structures over 14 years. Riquet died in 1680 before its inauguration. Key stops include Toulouse's Les Abattoirs, Musée des Augustins, and Fondation Bemberg; the Seuil de Naurouze obelisk; Abbaye de Saint-Papoul with its Romanesque chevet by the mysterious 'Maître de Cabestany'; Montolieu's Coopérative-Musée Cérès Franco, reopened after three years, showcasing 1,800 works from Brazilian naïfs to CoBrA; Capestang's Collégiale Saint-Étienne and Château des archevêques; Domaine de Roueïre in Quarante with Jeanne Susplugas's installation; and Narbonne's Musée Narbo Via by Foster + Partners, featuring a 70-meter lapidary wall with 760 Roman blocks. The route ends at the Étang de Thau with 'Balades artistiques en Méditerranée' featuring works by Françoise Pétrovitch, Robert Combas, and Élise Morin. The Hôtel de la Cité in Carcassonne offers five-star accommodation. The article appears in Beaux Arts Magazine's July 2026 double issue.
