Canal Cheong Jagerroos: Floating Islands and Cross-Cultural Abstraction

Canal Cheong Jagerroos, an artist born in Hainan in 1968 and raised in Macau, explores themes of movement, memory, and belonging's uncertainty through her diverse artistic practice. Her work encompasses abstract painting, drawing, calligraphy, installation, mixed media, and site-specific interventions. She pursued Fine Arts at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and later studied art and graphic design in Hong Kong. Influenced by her experiences across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Scandinavia, one of her significant projects is Floating Island, initiated in 2017, which investigates cultural fluidity through various mediums. This project has been showcased at multiple venues, including the Jyväskylä Art Museum and Salo Art Museum. Currently, her exhibition, Joy and Symmetry: Beyond the Surface, is on display from 1 April to 30 August 2026 at Helsinki Meilahti Kunsthalle / Art Museum in Finland, featuring eleven large-scale paintings and an installation replicating her studio. She has also exhibited globally at various prestigious locations and co-founded the Blue and Red art project (2015–2020) in China and Finland.
