Canadian Impressionists' First Major European Tour Announced

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The National Gallery of Canada is organizing the first major exhibition of Canadian Impressionist works, featuring around 120 rarely seen pieces created between 1880 and 1930. The show will travel to three European cities—Munich, Lausanne, and Montpellier—before arriving in Ottawa in autumn 2020. Curator Katerina Atanassova describes the exhibition as a missing chapter in the history of Impressionism, aiming to contextualize the collective contributions of Canadian artists. The works are grouped into seven thematic sections, tracing their evolution from early emulation of the Barbizon school to new forms inspired by northern light and landscapes. The tour opens at Kunsthalle München from July 19 to November 17, 2019, then moves to Fondation de l’Hermitage in Lausanne (January 24–May 24, 2020) and Musée Fabre in Montpellier (June 13–September 27, 2020), before concluding at the National Gallery of Canada.
