Michael Snow, a Canadian artist celebrated for his innovative contributions across various fields, has passed away at the age of 94. His death was announced by Jack Shainman Gallery, his representative. Over an impressive eight-decade career, Snow created a significant portfolio that explored perception through diverse mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, print, sound, and film. After graduating from The Ontario College of Art, he initially pursued music before transitioning into animation and film. His relocation to New York in the 1960s facilitated collaborations with notable artists like Jonas Mekas and Steve Reich. Returning to Toronto in the 1970s, he continued to experiment with photographic and cinematic techniques. His 1967 film Wavelength, known for its 45-minute slow zoom, earned him worldwide acclaim and is considered a pivotal work. Other significant films include Back and Forth (1969), La Région Centrale (1971), and So Is This (1982), the latter focusing on language. Snow remained active in his artistic endeavors, showcasing new works and performing music throughout his life. His latest exhibition, highlighting his 2022 book My Mother's Collection of Photographs, is currently displayed at Martine Aboucaya in Paris. In 2021, ArtReview described him as a humorous structuralist who utilized art to convey the bewildering nature of embodied perception.
