Camposud Symposium in Cagliari Marks 80 Years Since Gramsci's Death

The four-day Camposud symposium in Cagliari, curated by Giulia Palomba and Maria Paola Zedda, combined practical and theoretical discussions on art, philosophy, and politics to mark the 80th anniversary of Antonio Gramsci's death. Topics included cultural hegemony, neoliberalism, decolonization, Mediterranean issues, and new pedagogies. Speakers included Irit Rogoff (Goldsmiths College), who discussed the attack on education by neoliberalism and the need for new practices; Federico Zappino on queer epistemology; Gianfranco Rebucini on resisting neoliberalism through anticipatory politics; Peter Mayo on Gramscian themes of hegemony and intellectuals; Lisa Parola on mediation as conflict; Houria Bouteldja (Parti des Indigènes de la République) on decolonial alliances and critique of the white left; Marina Fokidis (Kunsthalle Athena) on the South as a state of mind; and artist Alfredo Jaar, who presented his Gramsci Trilogy and recent public art projects. Workshops were led by Juan Sandoval, Alessandra Marchi, Lisa Parola, and Micaela Deiana. The symposium aimed to open debate to non-specialists, though some academic presentations were dense.
