Campobasso's Suburban Walls Become an Open-Air Street Art Gallery
Since the first edition of the Draw the Line festival in 2011, which famously featured a mural by Blu that faced censorship threats, Campobasso has transformed its peripheral neighborhoods into an urban gallery. The residential district of San Giovanni now hosts numerous graffiti that animate building facades. Among the notable works is MACS's "It's Not a Game," which depicts Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un, Donald Trump, and an ISIS militant playing Risk for the world; this piece was ranked in Widewalls' 2017 global list. Other artists include Vesod, Made 514, and Milu Correch, whose unsettling mural surprises visitors. Recent interventions from the past year include works by Turin-based Joys, focusing on lettering, in the old Fontana Vecchia quarter. For the ImbrArtiamo project curated by Associati Malatesta, Andrea Ravo Mattoni and Luis Gomez De Teran created two exceptional pieces. Gomez's "Corpus Homini" covers the blind walls of two buildings with hands pierced by nails, breaking the two-dimensional plane, evoking not only Caravaggio but also the wounds of Gina Pane and the cuts of Lucio Fontana. A photo gallery documents works from the last three years by Ravo Mattoni, Gomez, Joys, Reser, Milu Correch, MACS, Vesod, and Made 514.
