CAMP's 2013 Documentary 'From Gulf to Gulf to Gulf' Highlights Anonymous Seafarers in M+ Collection

The 2013 documentary 'From Gulf to Gulf to Gulf' by the Mumbai-based studio CAMP explores the lives of anonymous sailors navigating trade routes in the Indian Ocean. Established in 2007 by Shaina Anand, Ashok Sukumaran, and Sanjay Bhangar, CAMP worked alongside seafarers for four years, utilizing footage captured on mobile phones from the early 2010s. The film showcases crews from the Gulf of Kutch, Gujarat, and their Pakistani and Iranian counterparts, making journeys to ports such as Sharjah and Mombasa. It features intimate moments and is accompanied by songs in Urdu, Hindi, and Arabic. The film also highlights historical trade connections between Persia, the Gulf, and India dating back to the first century BCE. It can be accessed on demand at M+, the new visual culture museum in Hong Kong.
