Camille Henrot's Room Movies at Galerie Dominique Fiat
Camille Henrot's exhibition Room Movies at Galerie Dominique Fiat in Paris (September 10–October 29, 2005) revives ghosts of experimental cinema. Henrot uses scratching on film stock, referencing Stan Brakhage, and appropriates images from horror film Night of the Living Dead (Romero), peplum Scope, and porn film Deep Inside. In Dying Living Woman, she erases parts of the film to create a luminous white specter. The films feature drawings and black lines, projecting her personal history onto original footage. A melancholic soundtrack by Benjamin Morando evokes a lost lover. The gallery was transformed into an underground cinema with benches, posters, and a wall screen. Henrot's techniques align with 1970s avant-garde film. The exhibition conjures the 'hauntological' dimension of cinema, as per Jacques Derrida's Specters of Marx. Yann Perreau reviewed the show.
