Cameron Jamie's Artpress Cover Story: A Serendipitous Discovery

In December 2001, Artpress featured an untitled gouache by Cameron Jamie on its cover, despite the editorial team having never seen his work. Editor Catherine Millet recounts receiving an unsolicited interview transcript from Denis Angus, then unknown to the magazine. No one on staff remembered arranging the interview, but impressed by the artist's statements, they decided to publish it. Jamie had only shown at Galerie de l'École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux and Galerie Praz-Delavallade; his drawings were concurrently exhibited at Centre de l'Estampe de Chatou. The cover image—a washed-out faun head—was chosen without hesitation. Since then, Jamie has been represented by Barbara Gladstone and Kamel Mennour, won the Prix Guerlain du Dessin in 2016, and collaborated with Mike Kelley on a Taschen book about Theo Ehret's female wrestling photography. His recent exhibition at Barbara Gladstone in Brussels featured ceramic masks resembling the 2001 cover. Denis Angus later became an artist and writer; Artpress published his interview with Philip-Lorca diCorcia in 2004.
