CAMeC in La Spezia reopens after eight-month renovation

institutional · 2026-04-26

On October 5, 2024, the CAMeC – Centro d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in La Spezia reopened after an eight-month restoration that transformed its styling, layout, exhibitions, and goals. The museum now presents over 250 works in a new installation by curator Gerhard Wolf, director of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck Institut and member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, supported by expert Yasmin Riyahi. Wolf's approach abandons strict chronology for a dialogue-based arrangement, alternating traditional rooms with spaces that recreate collectors' homes based on photographs and testimonies. The first room features Lucio Fontana's Concetto Spaziale (1955–56) and Gordon Matta-Clark's A W- Hole House: Roof Top Atrium (1973), both exploring the concept of holes as openings. The installation uses color gradients and rhythm to create an active visitor experience. Mayor Pierluigi Peracchini stated the aim is to return a lively, interactive space to the city with international vocation and local community focus. Andrea Corradino, President of Fondazione Carispezia, noted the museum's origin from the Premio del Golfo editions and the Cozzani (over 1000 works) and Battolini donations. Future programming and a new graphic identity by young agency Tub are planned.
