CAM Casoria fights closure with rental scheme, Saviano denounces institutional neglect
The Contemporary Art Museum of Casoria (CAM), founded in 2005 by artist Antonio Manfredi, is facing closure due to lack of funding. Despite holding a collection of about 1,000 works and running educational programs, it receives no support from local authorities. In a December 2016 gesture of recognition, the museum dedicated a room to writer Roberto Saviano, who later published an article in L'Espresso on May 17, 2017, denouncing the political indifference. Saviano noted that the mayor of Casoria attended the inauguration but failed to secure funding, and the museum is not even mentioned in the new municipal budget. In response, CAM launched 'Support o' CAM,' a radical survival plan: 10% of its 3,000 square meters of exhibition space will be rented out, artworks will be available for adoption (€50/year for individuals, €500 for companies), and artists can rent one meter of space for €10/month (€120/year) to display their work for a year. The initiative is framed as a transparent, self-managed provocation and a final SOS to institutions.
